Over the counter (OTC) decongestants for children.
Parents have long resorted to the use of cold and cough remedies bought over the counter when a child has a cold or cough.
The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) has reviewed studies of such use. They conclude that there is no benefit to children in the use of these meds. There is a small benefit to adults in using decongestants for colds, but they should be aware of the dangers in such medications. Because a medication is OTC does not mean it is innocuous.
